The overview

Few cities have this geography: a flat-topped mountain with hiking trails ending in the suburbs, cold-water beaches on one side, winelands forty minutes inland.

Table Mountain defines Cape Town physically and practically — the weather, the views, the way neighbourhoods sit against its slopes. The city is also inseparable from its history, and the sites that address it directly (Robben Island, the District Six Museum) are among the most worthwhile things to do. Beyond the centre, the Cape Peninsula runs south through Boulders' penguin colony to Cape Point, and the winelands around Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are a straightforward day trip. Summer, from December to March, brings the south-easter, a wind strong enough to close the cable car. Winter is wetter but the whales arrive along the coast.

Climb Table Mountain early

Platteklip Gorge takes 2–3 hours of steep steps. Start at first light and take the cable car down.

Drive the peninsula

A full day: Hout Bay, Chapman's Peak, Cape Point, Boulders and Kalk Bay on the way back.

Visit Robben Island

Ferries are weather-dependent and sell out; book online days ahead and go early.

Spend a day in the winelands

Stellenbosch for classic estates, Franschhoek for the wine tram, both with designated drivers.

What to eat

More social institution than meal — wood-fired grilling, usually over the weekend.
Koeksister
A plaited doughnut soaked in syrup; the Cape Malay version is spiced and coconut-rolled.

Local etiquette

Engage with the history rather than around it; the museums are candid and well-run.
Tipping is expected: 10–15% in restaurants, a few rand for informal parking attendants.
Ask locally about which areas to avoid after dark rather than assuming.

Practical notes

Hire a car — public transport does not reach the peninsula or the winelands usefully.
The cable car closes for wind frequently; check the live status before driving up.
Don't leave anything visible in a parked car, anywhere.
Load shedding (scheduled power cuts) still happens; a torch and a power bank are useful.
