A Nabataean city cut into rose sandstone, and a desert beyond it
The overview
Petra is far larger than the famous facade suggests — a whole city of tombs, temples and staircases spread across several valleys, best given two full days.
The Nabataeans carved Petra out of sandstone from around the fourth century BCE, building a trading capital with sophisticated water management in a place that receives almost no rain. The Siq — a 1.2km slot canyon — delivers you to the Treasury, but that is the entrance, not the site. Beyond it lie the Street of Facades, a Roman theatre, the Royal Tombs, and 800 steps up to the Monastery, which is bigger than the Treasury and far less crowded. Two hours south, Wadi Rum's granite and sandstone massifs rise out of red sand; Bedouin camps there run 4x4 tours, camel treks and scrambling routes. The two together make a compact, rewarding week.

What to do
01
Around 800 rock-cut steps from the basin; go late afternoon when the facade catches the light and the crowds have gone.
02
The high viewpoint looking straight down on the Treasury — the legitimate version of the famous photo.
03
A guided back route that arrives at the Monastery from above; requires a permit and a guide.
04
One night is enough; choose a camp with proper facilities and a Bedouin family running it.
A suggested route
A structure that works, not a schedule to follow to the minute. Move the days around to suit the weather.
Day 1
Siq at opening, Treasury, Street of Facades, Royal Tombs, theatre.
Day 2
Al-Khubtha viewpoint in the morning, Monastery in the late afternoon.
Days 3–4
4x4 through the main sights, scramble a canyon, overnight in camp, sunrise on the dunes.
Day 5
Drive north, float, and rinse thoroughly.
What to eat
Mansaf
Jordan's national dish: lamb cooked in fermented dried yoghurt over rice, eaten communally.
Zarb
Bedouin meat and vegetables cooked in an underground sand oven, standard at desert camps.
Knafeh
Shredded pastry over melted cheese in sugar syrup, best from a busy counter in the evening.
