Granite towers, ice fields and a wind that decides everything
The overview
Southern Patagonia holds the continent's best trekking: the W and O circuits in Torres del Paine, the Fitz Roy trails from El Chaltén, and a glacier you can hear calving from a boardwalk.
Patagonia spans two countries and roughly a million square kilometres, but most visitors concentrate on a corridor between Puerto Natales in Chile and El Calafate and El Chaltén in Argentina. Torres del Paine's W trek covers about 80km over four to five days between refugios and campsites, all of which must be booked months ahead. Across the border, El Chaltén puts world-class day hikes within walking distance of the village — no permits, no fees, no reservations. The connecting bus routes are reliable but slow, and the border crossing eats half a day. The wind is the thing nobody prepares for: sustained 60–80 km/h gusts in the summer months are normal, and they will change how you walk, pitch and photograph.

What to do
01
Four to five days, three valleys, refugio beds or tents booked separately with two different concessionaires.
02
A 20km round trip from El Chaltén with a brutal final climb and the best mountain view in the region.
03
Gets you within a few hundred metres of the ice face; runs only when the wind allows.
04
A day trip from El Calafate; the boardwalk system means you can spend three hours listening for calving.
A suggested route
A structure that works, not a schedule to follow to the minute. Move the days around to suit the weather.
Days 1–2
Arrive, hire gear, food shop, mandatory park briefing, early night.
Days 3–7
Paine Grande, Grey, Francés valley, Chileno and the towers at dawn.
Days 8–9
Bus to El Calafate, rest day, Perito Moreno.
Days 10–13
Laguna de los Tres, Laguna Torre, Loma del Pliegue Tumbado, with a spare day for weather.
What to eat
Cordero al palo
Whole lamb splayed on an iron cross over embers — the region's signature meal, cooked for hours.
Calafate berry
A tart local berry made into jam and ice cream; legend says eating it means you return.
Centolla
King crab from the Magellan channels, at its best in Punta Arenas and Puerto Natales.
