Packing well is a system, not a list. The core of what you carry does not change between a weekend in Lisbon and three months across Asia; only the climate layer on top of it does. Build the core once, learn to trust it, and every subsequent trip takes twenty minutes to pack.
Chapter 01The core, which never changes
Regardless of destination or duration, the same set travels: four to five tops, two bottoms, a week of underwear and socks, one warm mid-layer, one packable waterproof shell, sleepwear, one pair of broken-in walking shoes and one pair of light sandals or flats. That is the entire clothing list for any trip longer than four days, because beyond a week you are doing laundry regardless of how much you packed.
Keep it to one or two colour families so every top works with every bottom. Choose fabrics that dry overnight — merino and synthetics over cotton — because that is what makes the small list viable. Cotton is comfortable and takes two days to dry, which is precisely the wrong property.
Chapter 02Climate modules on top
Cold adds a base layer, a warm hat, gloves and an insulated jacket that compresses. Hot adds a sun hat, a light long-sleeved shirt for sun and for religious sites, and swimwear. Wet adds proper waterproof over-trousers and a dry bag. Mixed conditions add nothing at all, because that is what the layering core already does.
The common mistake in cold weather is one very heavy coat instead of three light layers; the heavy coat is either too much or too little, while the layers adjust. The common mistake in hot weather is packing too little sun protection and too much clothing generally, when a long-sleeved linen shirt outperforms a t-shirt in strong sun.
Chapter 03Documents, electronics and the small kit
Passport, cards, insurance details and any visa paperwork travel in one place on your body or in the bag that never leaves you. Everything gets photographed and emailed to yourself before departure. Take a universal adapter, a multi-port charger so one plug serves everything, a power bank, and only the cables you need.
The medical kit stays small: any prescription medication in original packaging, painkillers, rehydration salts, plasters, blister treatment and any personal essentials. Everything else can be bought where you are going, usually more cheaply, and pharmacies exist in every country on earth.
Chapter 04The bag itself
A forty-litre carry-on that opens flat is the most versatile piece of luggage for most travel. It fits the majority of cabin allowances, carries comfortably on stairs and cobbles, and opening flat means you can find things without unpacking everything. Wheels are excellent on pavement and useless everywhere else — choose according to where you actually go.
Use packing cubes, not because they save space, but because they preserve organisation over three weeks. One for tops, one for bottoms and underwear, one for the dirty laundry. The system survives contact with reality; loose packing does not.
Chapter 05What to leave at home
The list is consistent: the second pair of jeans, the shoes you have not yet broken in, the full-sized toiletries, the just-in-case outfit for an occasion that will not occur, the books you will not read, and the third camera lens. Between them these account for most of the weight in an overpacked bag.
A useful test is to lay everything out and remove a third. Almost nobody, afterwards, can identify what was removed. Leave a third of the bag empty for the things you buy, and remember that anything genuinely essential can be purchased at your destination within an hour of realising you need it.
